About Acadia Mountain Guides:
AMG was founded in 1993 and is owned by Jon Tierney. AMG operates a year round program of courses and guiding that extends from the sea side cliffs of Acadia to distant summits in South America and Asia. The school is AMGA accredited and all guide staff have participated in AMGA guide training and certification. Jon is an IMFGA guide who has served on the AMGA Board of Directors He is s presently on the Technical Committee and an AMGA Instructor/Examiner. Jon was the primary developer of the AMGA Top Rope Site Manager program and chaired that discipline from 1998-2004. Visit acadiamountainguides.com for a complete overview.

During the summer, AMG operates primarily out of Bar Harbor, ME - home to Acadia National Park. Bar Harbor is a busy tourist town similar to North Conway, Estes Park, or Jackson Hole. The climbing is predominantly granite and Acadia is known for single pitch sea cliff climbing right over Frenchman's Bay. The 250' Southwall of Champlain Mountain features great corner lines on superb granite and is great terrain for introducing clients to multi-pitch climbing. Forty minutes inland are the Clifton Crags with steep sport climbing on granite. Alpine rock climbing on Katahdin is about 2.5 hours away. Both areas have excellent bouldering opportunities.

Acadia Mountain Guides and Alpenglow Adventure Sports offers a number of internship opportunities for qualified college and high school students interested in the fields of adventure education, climbing instruction and guiding, guide service management and outdoor retail business management.

Our internships are not fluff - they are true experiential education and hard work - you will be making real decisions with real consequences. You will be expected to be very motivated, a solid self-starter, detail oriented and willing to work a full schedule. In return, you take home many new skills, experiences and insights that will prove beneficial throughout your career. Each intern will develop a focused project with unique goals and expectations that are mutually beneficial to the intern and to the organization. This should be followed through from conception to implementation.

Ideal interns will have completed or be in the process of completing a degree closely related to the nature of their desired internship. Internships range from 5 - 12 weeks and are based in Orono, Maine or Bar Harbor, Maine.

Sample internships:

Outdoor Leadership / Climbing instruction - provide instruction in climbing and various outdoor activities, slide shows, present seminars, apprentice with AMGA certified guides.

Summer Camp Leadership - co-lead climbing and adventure youth camp programs, prepare course logistics, provide on-going communication with campers and parents, conduct follow up evaluations.

Wilderness Medicine - instructor support for WFR, WFA, EMT and guide training courses, co-teach as appropriate, score written exams and practical scenarios.  

Challenge Course Facilitation / Construction - participate in the delivery of training programs, school and therapeutic activities, program marketing, and ropes course design and construction.

Guide Service Administration -   course reservations, trade show representation, create, edit and organize course support materials, develop and market new course, prepare itineraries, research new venues, alumni relations, edit program newsletters, and provide customer service via phone, internet and in-person.

Outdoor Retail Sales and Management - participate in all aspects of operation - sales, inventory, display/marketing, website development, accounting. collecting data for statistical reporting, updating databases develop and post marketing and enrollment information, maintain inventory of administrative needs, answer, and route telephone calls as appropriate, assist with enrollment procedures as requested, update program manuals.

E-Commerce - develop and / or maintain outdoor retail e-commerce sites. Image preparation, formatting, site design.

Preferred Qualifications for interns seeking a climbing school internship with an outdoor education/climbing instructor focus:

•  Outdoor leadership experience

•  3 years climbing experience including a diversity of areas and routes.

•  60 days outdoor climbing and 20 days of outdoor leadership / climbing instructor experience within past 3 years.

•  Demonstrated ability to lead climb at a 5.8 standard.

•  AMGA Top Rope Site Manager certification (may be taken during internship), Wilderness First Responder.

•  Maine Guide or Trip Leader license may be required.  

•  Preference will be given to candidates seeking multiple seasons of employment after internship and who are pursuing further guide education and certification.

Summer Camp Trip Leaders

Approximately June 15 - August 18, 2006 (4, 6, and 7 week opportunities)

Acadia Mountain Guides is seeking highly motivated, self starting individuals to lead coed, week-long rock climbing and adventure trips in Maine and NH for teens. Trips focus on rock climbing, group living, wilderness skills, cooperation, independence, and fun. We expect our leaders to be professional and fun-loving with a keen sense for managing risk, problem-solving and responding to group and individual needs. Leaders are on duty 24/7 during field sessions. Staff are responsible for preparing equipment and food rations, transport, shuttles, and supervising intra-camp sessions.

Summer Camp Program Overview

Time Frame:   approximately mid June to mid August (6 - 12 week opportunities).  

Our RockPro program is an intense, four week series that teaches a full spectrum of rock climbing skills from basic knots and climbing technique to advanced lead climbing as campers abilities allow. Throughout the series, campers and leaders will interact with senior AMG staff when on advanced terrain. The program travels between Maine, NH and Quebec.

In early summer we offer two adventure camps - one that focuses on hiking, rock climbing and rafting and one that focuses on sea kayaking, rock climbing and hiking.

The Young Explorer's Day Camp takes place mostly between Bangor, ME and Acadia National Park. This camp provides day and overnight camp experiences for 9 - 12 year olds. Each camp offers s offer a mix of adventure activities including ropes course, rock climbing, hiking, caving, canoeing, kayaking, and general exploring.

Ideal qualifications for camp positions:
Age 21 or older, significant personal skills in rock climbing, backcountry travel / camping and other outdoor pursuits, experience / expertise teaching rock climbing and outdoor skills, strong interpersonal / leadership skills with teens and pre-teens and a desire to serve as a positive role model, excellent driving record, excellent physical condition, ME Guide license or willing to obtain it, WFA or WFR, LifeGuard Training and AMGA Top Rope Site Manager Certification or AMGA Rock Instructor Course required. The latter are available in house prior to start of season at reduced cost for qualified candidates. Opportunities to work in climbing school or outdoor retail store may be available before and after camps.

All camp staff participate in training and evaluation beginning in mid-June and camps begin in early July. The two week training and evaluation is unpaid and during this period final assignments will be determined. At this intensive session we go over wilderness skills, program rules and regulations, initiatives and games, climbing site management, multi-pitch skills, LNT expectations, area familiarization, wilderness first aid, and tons more.

Benefits:
Salary commensurate with education and experience up to $500.00 / camp week. Climbing Instructor / Top Rope Site Manager

Seeking a Certified Top Rope Site Manager to work in Acadia National Park and Maine for the 2007 summer season.

Responsibilities: Instruct top rope rock climbing for individuals and groups. Inspect and maintain equipment. Assist in company operation, marketing, and sales. Opportunity to work in outdoor retail / climbing store when not in the field.

•  Minimum of 3 years climbing experience including a diversity of areas and routes

•  Minimum of 40 days outdoor climbing per year and 40 days of outdoor leadership / climbing instructor experience within past 3 years

•  Demonstrated ability to currently and safely lead II, 5.8 and top rope 5.10.

•  AMGA Top Rope Site Manager certification

•  Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification if working within 1 hour of rescue otherwise at least Wilderness First Responder.

•  Maine Guide or Trip Leader license may be required.  

•  Demonstrated ability in the following: managing top rope sites safely and efficiently, group teaching and leadership, knowledge of climbing equipment, natural history, environmental consciousness, judgment and decision-making, improvised rescue, general outdoor skills.

•  Preference will be given to candidates seeking multiple seasons of employment and who are pursuing further guide education and certification.

A typical day:
The typical day begins around 7:30 am with a morning guides meeting to set the stage for the day. Clients arrive usually between 8 - 9:00 am for most local guiding. During the summer a large percentage of the guiding in Acadia is comprised of half day entry level sessions for families, couples and groups. These require a high level of organization and efficiency to get a reasonable amount climbing in. Morning sessions run until noon with a 30 - 60 minute break before meeting afternoon clients. After returning from the afternoon session, guides are expected put gear away, complete equipment logs and to complete all course or client related administration such as confirming payment, verifying client data, and reviewing evaluations. The day usually ends around 5:30 pm.

Most staff arrive in early to mid June. Training takes place at that time as well. Guiding in June is sporadic - expect 1 - 3 days per week. Things get busy in July and August with many staff guiding 5 - 7 days per week for several weeks in a row. Approximately two guides continue to work through September and early October as the rock season winds down.

Benefits:

Outdoor Equipment Sales Associate
Bar Harbor (seasonal)

Requires excellent people skills, solid organizational skills and a strong knowledge of outdoor activities and outdoor equipment. Per diem / part time with possible full time opportunity.

Responsibilities

  • Primary responsibility is customer interaction and sales in a retail store environment.
  • Represents Alpenglow Adventure Sports and Acadia Mountain Guides to the general public and provides superior public service.
  • Answers phone and email, processes internet and phone mail orders.
  • Continually develops expert product knowledge and marketing ideas for all product lines.
  • Responds to client inquiries and processes reservations.
  • Organizes and cleans retail sales floor, prepares merchandising displays, creates labels
  • Processes incoming inventory, prepares ASAP inventory orders, purchase orders,
  • Evaluate and suggest new merchandise and product categories.
  • Operates POS system   and cash register: enters sales, client data, processes credit cards, prepares daily   cash ups.
  • Works with management to further develop the vision and mission of the corporation.
  • Monitors and maintains familiarity with all written, published and website materials.
