About Acadia Mountain Guides
AMG was founded in 1993 and is owned by Jon Tierney. AMG operates a year round program of courses and guiding that extends from the sea side cliffs of Acadia to distant summits in South America and Asia. The school is AMGA accredited and all guide staff have participated in either PCIA or AMGA guide training and certification. Jon is an IMFGA guide who has served on the AMGA Board of Directors and the AMGA Technical Committee and was formerly an AMGA Instructor/Examiner. Jon is the current Educational Director of the newly formed Professional Climbing Instructor's Association and was the original designer and catalyst behind of the AMGA Top Rope Site Manager (Single Pitch) program from 1997-2004.

During the summer, AMG operates primarily out of Bar Harbor, ME - home to Acadia National Park. Bar Harbor is a busy tourist town similar to North Conway, Estes Park, or Jackson Hole. The climbing is predominantly granite and Acadia is known for single pitch sea cliff climbing right over Frenchman's Bay. The 250' Southwall of Champlain Mountain features great corner lines on superb granite and is great terrain for introducing clients to multi-pitch climbing. Forty minutes inland are the Clifton Crags with steep sport climbing on granite. Alpine rock climbing on Katahdin is about 2.5 hours away. Both areas have excellent bouldering opportunities.  

Alpenglow Adventure Sports is a division of Acadia Mountain Guides, Inc. Alpenglow operates a retail store in Orono, ME a seasonal store in Bar Harbor, ME, and on-line at Alpenglowgear.com.

Apprenticeships / Internships
Acadia Mountain Guides and Alpenglow Adventure Sports offers a number of internship opportunities for qualified college and high school students interested in the fields of adventure education, climbing instruction and guiding, guide service management and outdoor retail business management.

Our internships are not fluff - they are true experiential education and hard work - you will be making real decisions with real consequences. You will be expected to be very motivated, a solid self-starter, detail oriented and willing to work a full schedule. In return, you take home many new skills, experiences and insights that will prove beneficial throughout your career. Each intern will develop a focused project with unique goals and expectations that are mutually beneficial to the intern and to the organization. This should be followed through from conception to implementation.

Ideal interns will have completed or be in the process of completing a degree closely related to the nature of their desired internship. Internships range from 5 - 12 weeks and are based in Orono, Maine or Bar Harbor, Maine.

Rock Climbing & Adventure Trip Leader Internship

This position may be considered as an internship or a regular position. Acadia Mountain Guides is seeking highly motivated, self starting individuals to lead coed, week-long climbing and adventure trips in Maine and NH for teens. Trips focus on group living, wilderness skills, rock climbing, cooperation, independence, and fun. We expect our leaders to be professional and fun-loving with a keen sense for managing risk, problem-solving and responding to group and individual needs. Program leaders are on duty 24/7.

Support staff are responsible for preparing equipment and food rations, transport, shuttles, and supervising intra-camp sessions. Leadership / instruction opportunities available to appropriately skilled applicants.

Time Frame:   approximately mid June to mid August  

Qualifications
Age 21 or older, significant personal skills in rock climbing, backcountry travel / camping and other outdoor pursuits, experience / expertise teaching rock climbing and outdoor skills, strong interpersonal / leadership skills with teens and pre-teens and a desire to serve as a positive role model, excellent driving record, excellent physical condition. WFA or WFR, Lifeguard Training (available) and PCIA (available) or AMGA Climbing Instructor certification. Opportunities to work in climbing school or outdoor retail store may be available before and after camps.

All camp staff attend training beginning in mid-June. At this intensive session we go over wilderness skills, program rules and regulations, initiatives and games, climbing site management, LNT expectations, area familiarization, wilderness first aid, and tons more.

Climbing School Management Internship

This internship presents a broad exposure to the multiple aspects of running a small business with a focus on marketing and customer service. Interns will be expected to process course reservations, attend trade shows, create, edit and organize course support materials, prepare itineraries, research new venues, inspect and organize equipment, prepare and edit newsletters, summarize client evaluations, and provide customer service via phone, internet and in-person. Intern will have opportunities to shadow field courses (rock or ice climbing, winter camping / mountaineering, wilderness medicine, avalanche as season allows).

Location / Availability
This internship is available from 6 - 14 weeks and is located in spring and fall in Orono, ME and in the summer in either Orono or Bar Harbor, ME.

Qualifications
Ideal interns will have completed or be in the process of completing a degree closely related to the nature of the internship such as outdoor education or business majors intending to operate their own service based outdoor business. Climbing, backcountry skiing and/or mountaineering skills highly recommended but not required.

Rock Climbing and Adventure Trip Leaders

Approximately June 15 - August 20th (4, 6, and 7 week opportunities)

This position may be considered as an internship or a regular position. Summer Camp Program Overview
Our RockPro program is an intense, four week series that teaches a full spectrum of rock climbing skills from basic knots and climbing technique to advanced lead climbing as campers abilities allow. Throughout the series, campers and leaders will interact with senior AMG staff when on advanced terrain. The program travels between Maine, NH and Quebec.

In early summer we offer two adventure camps - one that focuses on hiking, rock climbing and rafting and one that focuses on sea kayaking, rock climbing and hiking.

The Young Explorer's Day Camp takes place mostly between Bangor, ME and Acadia National Park. This camp provides day and overnight camp experiences for 9 - 12 year olds. Each camp offers s offer a mix of adventure activities including ropes course, rock climbing, hiking, caving, canoeing, kayaking, and general exploring.

Ideal qualifications for trip leaders
Age 23 or older, significant personal skills in rock climbing, backcountry travel / camping and other outdoor pursuits, experience / expertise teaching rock climbing and outdoor skills, strong interpersonal / leadership skills with teens and pre-teens and a desire to serve as a positive role model, excellent driving record, excellent physical condition, Lifeguard Training, WFA or WFR, and PCIA or AMGA training or certification highly desired. Many trainings are available in house prior to start of season at reduced cost for qualified candidates. Opportunities to work in climbing school or outdoor retail store may be available before and after camps.

All camp staff participate in training and evaluation beginning in mid-June and camps begin in early July. The two week training and evaluation is unpaid and during this period final assignments will be determined. At this intensive session we go over wilderness skills, program rules and regulations, initiatives and games, climbing site management, multi-pitch skills, LNT expectations, area familiarization, wilderness first aid, and tons more.

Benefits
Salary is commensurate with education and experience and nature of position depending upon whether it is an internship or regular position (range is $1700.00 to upwards of 4000.00 for the season). Access to professional courses (climbing/ mountaineering, Maine Trip Leader, WMA wilderness medicine, PCIA and AMGA training) is available in house prior to start of season at significantly reduced cost.   Housing limited depending upon location, pro-purchase access. Top Managed / Single Pitch Climbing Instructor

Acadia Mountain Guides, Inc. is seeking Top Managed and Single Pitch Climbing Instructors for the 2009 summer season. We seek expert climbers who are passionate about rock climbing and sharing this information with others.

The typical day begins around 7:30 am with a morning guides meeting to set the stage for the day. Clients arrive usually between 8 - 9:00 am for most local guiding. During the summer a large percentage of the guiding in Acadia is comprised of half day entry level sessions for families, couples and groups. These require a high level of organization and efficiency to get a reasonable amount climbing in. Morning sessions run until noon with a 30 - 60 minute break before meeting afternoon clients. After returning from the afternoon session, guides are expected put gear away, complete equipment logs and to complete all course or client related administration such as confirming payment, verifying client data, and reviewing evaluations. The day usually ends around 5:30 pm.

Employees are expected to arrive in early to mid June. Training takes place in mid - late June. Guiding in June is sporadic - expect 1 - 3 days per week. Things get busy in July and August with many staff working 7 days per week. Approximately two instructors / guides continue to work through September and early October as the rock season winds down. Opportunity to work in outdoor retail store when not in the field.

Instructor/Guide Related Expectations (80%)

  • Recommended age 23 or greater with a minimum of 3 years climbing experience including a diversity of areas and routes. May be waived for exceptional candidates.
  • Climbing resume showing a minimum of 50 days outdoor climbing per year.
  • Demonstrated ability to currently and safely lead routes up grade II, 5.8.
  • PCIA Top Managed or Single Pitch Instructor or AMGA Top Rope Site Manager or Single Pitch Instructor Certification (may be completed at start of season)
  • Wilderness First Responder and CPR certification
  • Demonstrated ability in the following: managing top rope sites safely and efficiently, teaching and leadership, climbing equipment, natural history, environmental consciousness, judgment and decision-making, improvised rescue, general outdoor skills.
  • Requires excellent people skills, solid organizational skills and a strong knowledge of outdoor activities and outdoor equipment.
  • Preference will be given to candidates seeking multiple seasons of employment and who are pursuing further guide education and certification.

Benefits

  • Climbing resume showing a minimum of 50 days outdoor climbing per year and 40 days instructing climbing or guiding in last two years including ascents up to at least grade IV.
  • Demonstrated ability to currently and safely lead routes: grade III, 5.10, A1.  
  • PCIA or AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Certification. (may be completed at start of season)
  • PCIA Lead Climbing Instructor Certified or graduate or AMGA Rock Instructor Course or greater for employees guiding multi-pitch terrain (may be completed at start of season)
  • Wilderness First Responder and CPR certification
  • Demonstrated ability in the following: managing top rope sites safely and efficiently and/or multi-pitch guiding of 2 - 3 clients on grades I-III, teaching and leadership, climbing equipment, natural history, environmental consciousness, judgment and decision-making, improvised rescue, general outdoor skills.
  • Requires excellent people skills, solid organizational skills and a strong knowledge of outdoor activities and outdoorequipment.
  • Preference will be given to candidates seeking multiple seasons of employment and who are pursuing further guide education and certification.

Outdoor Equipment Sales Associate

Alpenglow Adventure Sports, a division of Acadia Mountain Guides, Inc. is seeking energetic, out-going and self starting individuals with a knowledge of outdoor gear to work in retail locations in Orono and Bar Harbor, ME. The position involves retail sales and climbing school reservations.  

Responsibilities

  • Primary responsibility is customer interaction and sales in a retail store environment.
  • Represents Alpenglow Adventure Sports and Acadia Mountain Guides to the general public with superior service.
  • Answers phone and email, processes internet and phone mail orders, processes climbing school reservations.
  • Continually develops expert product knowledge and marketing ideas for all product lines.
  • Responds to client inquiries and processes reservations.
  • Posts and removes products from on-line store.
  • Organizes and cleans retail sales floor, prepares merchandising displays, creates labels.
  • Processes incoming inventory, prepares ASAP inventory orders, purchase orders.
  • Evaluate and suggest new merchandise and product categories.
  • Operates POS system and cash register: processes sales, client data, prepares daily cash ups.
  • Monitors and maintains familiarity with all written, published and website materials.
  • Maintain fresh appearance and cleanliness of store and organizes merchandise displays.

Location / Availability
Beginning in spring 2009, part and full time positions are available in Orono, ME. Part time and full-time seasonal positions open in Bar Harbor, ME from May 15 th to Columbus Day. Orono positions are considered any time.

Qualifications

Requires excellent people skills, solid organizational skills, and an ability to work independently without a supervisor present. A knowledge of outdoor activities, particularly rock and ice climbing, and outdoor equipment or a willingness to rapidly learn is required. Knowledge of local climbing, hiking and paddling helpful. The characteristics we seek are:

Climbing School & Retail Operations Manager

The Operations Manager is a challenging, highly independent position that offers the right individual the opportunity to manage multiple aspects of Acadia Mountain Guides Climbing School and Alpenglow Adventure Sports. Acadia Mountain Guides Inc. is looking for a strong, experienced outdoor oriented individual who also brings detail-oriented administrative and management and a growth-oriented vision. The Operations Manager is the company backbone, the "go to" person for everyone else in the company and should be extremely comfortable managing varied tasks, super organized and able to deal with changing needs. They are in the limelight every day: developing and maintaining systems, forming and maintaining relationships, converting inquiries into sales. Based in Orono, Maine, the role has multiple purposes:

Climbing School Marketing and Management. (20%)

  • Further develop outreach relationships with potential new clients through interactions in special events, outreach and local courses.
  • Pursue universities, youth groups, schools, camps, etc., for groups programs and participation in climbing training programs courses and wilderness medicine courses especially during the off-season.
  • Maintain relationships with clients.
  • Convert potential clients to sales through phone, email, and in-person interactions.
  • Maintain client-tracking system and manage the retail sales team's priorities as they relate to guiding.
  • Continuing development and on-going maintenance of internet sites and placements
  • Schedule staff.
  • In the stores and local communities, oversee signage, packets, promotion racks, and other advertising materials.
  • Design and run staff trainings to better educate all staff to market climbing programs.
  • Manage climbing school equipment.
  • Occasionally organize trip-specific program logistics.
  • Manage / develop climbing school information exchange with retail sales associates.
  • Work with land managers to maintain appropriate land use permits.

Retail Store Operation Management / Marketing / E-commerce development (20%)

  • Increasingly develop product knowledge and marketing ideas for products. Develop in-store displays and merchandising cycles. Develop competitive promotion programs.
  • Provide retail sales coverage, processes on-line orders, maintains awareness of and trouble shoots customer issues.
  • Oversees and maintains inventory systems.   Prepares ASAP orders, purchase orders, process inventory received.   Evaluates and selects new merchandise and product categories. Attends annual trade shows.
  • Maintain store appearance / cleanliness, files, fixtures, outside appearance.  
  • Continuing development and on-going maintenance of internet sites and placements
  • Prepares Bar Harbor location for seasonal opening and closure.
  • Monitor purchasing, attends trades shows, select new products and processes new inventories.

Summer Camp Administration

  • Develop advertising material and market summer camp program.
  • Hire and supervise interns and camp leaders.
  • Organize leadership training for school staff at start of season.
  • Assure that necessary permits and reservations are secured.
  • Oversee care and maintenance of camp equipment, etc.  
  • Serve as parent liason and contact.
  • Continuing development and on-going maintenance of internet sites and engineered placements
  • Organize vehicle rentals and vehicle maintenance.
  • Organize camping and logistical reservations
  • Construct new campsites
  • Be able to lead Young Explorer, Teen Adventure and RockPro I camps

Administrative Management (20%)

  • Works with owner to further develop the vision and mission of the corporation. Problem solves as needed. Responsible for making critical decisions.
  • Prepares and checks daily deposits. Maintain accounting and financial records, tax reporting, track payables and receivables, Prepares monthly account statements.
  • Oversee part-time employees. Delegates a variety of assignments to sales associates and guides. Develops daily work schedules and feedback processes.   Process evaluations, etc. Supervises guide paperwork. Insures adequate store coverage. Meets weekly with employees. Communicates and follows up on directives from owner.
  • Provide start up and on-going training to retail employees. Organizes new employee training.
  • Familiar with services, answer questions, make reservations, etc. Monitors all written, published and website materials.
  • Maintains client data files, manages email. Manage multiple address lists of retail clients, guiding clients and information requests. Send regular electronic and post notifications of sales, special programs, etc. Manage the response to and processing of potential client requests. Oversees data collection and data input of other employees.
  • Develop and places ads for magazines, brochures, and radio and other media. Develop, plan and promote future programs and marketing strategy.
  • Supervises client registration and reservations. Oversee advance reservation follow up.

Instruction and Guiding (20%)

  • Instruct Top Managed climbing programs (rock or ice).
  • Lead winter skills courses and basic mountaineering trips such as Mt. Washington and Katahdin summit trips.
  • Acquisition and maintenance of all required certification (CPR/WFR/AMGA/PCIA/AVY, etc).
  • Personal and professional development as a mountaineer, climber, and instructor.

Qualifications
Requires excellent people skills, solid organizational skills, and an ability to think and act independently. A Bachelor's Degree is recommended but not essential. A strong knowledge of outdoor activities, particularly rock and ice climbing, and outdoor equipment or a desire to rapidly learn is required. Working knowledge of local climbing, hiking and paddling as well as Acadia National Park helpful. The primary characteristics we seek are:

$26,000 - $30,000.00 annual salary. This is a salaried position with three weeks paid vacation after 12 months of continuous employment. Flexible schedule available during certain seasons. The Director of Climbing Programs is a challenging, highly independent position that offers the right individual the opportunity to manage both administrative and "in-the-field" portions of Acadia Mountain Guides Climbing School. Acadia Mountain Guides is looking for a strong, experienced guide who also brings detail-oriented administrative skills and a growth-oriented vision. Sales and client relations will be a primary focus of this position when not in the field. This means the right applicant will love time with clients and potential clients. This person is in the limelight every day: forming and maintaining relationships and converting inquiries into sales.

Responsibilities

Climbing Sales (20%). First and foremost, this person must be the voice of our climbing program   - to staff, clients, land managers and the community.

  • Further develop outreach relationships with potential new clients through interactions in special events, outreach and local courses.
  • Pursue universities, youth groups, schools, camps, etc., for groups programs and participation in leadership training programs such as AMGA and PCIA courses and wilderness medicine courses especially during the off-season.
  • Convert potential clients to sales through phone, email, and in-person interactions.
  • Maintain client-tracking system and manage the retail sales team's priorities as they relate to guiding.

Outdoor Program Participation / Guiding (20%).This means this role continues to have heavy presence in rock, ice, and mountaineering programming by being available to guide day to day clients as needed.

  • Lead beginner through advanced climbing, avalanche and outdoor education programs as technical skills and certifications allow
  • Acquisition and maintenance of all required certification (CPR/WFR/AMGA/AVY, etc).
  • Personal and professional development as a mountaineer, climber, and instructor.
  • Manage client check-in and follow up processing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Summer Camp Administration (20%). Direct summer camp program, train leaders, manage operation.

  • Develop advertising material and market summer camp program.
  • Hire and supervise interns and camp leaders.
  • Organize leadership training for school staff at start of season.
  • Assure that necessary permits and reservations are secured.
  • Serve as parent liason and contact.

Mountain Administration (10%). This role will also support the owner in developing and maintaining marketing and support materials and providing course logistics. Especially important will be the responsibility for building contacts and relationships with potential groups and specialty clients.

  • In the stores and local communities, maintain all signage, packets, promotion racks, and other advertising materials.
  • Design and run staff trainings to better educate all staff to market climbing trips.
  • Maintain all climbing equipment and the system to track it.
  • Organize trip-specific country logistics.
  • Manage / develop climbing school information exchange with retail sales associates.
  • Work with land managers to maintain appropriate land use permits.

Specialty Guiding (15%). They should grow into an ability to run certification courses such as AIARE, AMGA, and PCIA courses, international trips and climbing programs in both primary and new destinations, offering the absolute highest quality experience to our clients.

  • Offer the highest quality rock climbing trips and international destination programs. With extensive guiding and climbing experience, this person is also committed to what makes AMG special.
  • Continue to build guide skills and personal mountaineering experience and reputation throughout the world.
  • Develop new international guiding venues.

Retail   (15%)

  • Provide periodic retail sales coverage during peak periods.
  • Oversee climbing gear purchasing for store.
  • Assist in retail on-line store maintenance.
Qualifications
The candidate who will be most successful in this position is someone who is well educated in a variety of subjects, from literature to business, and who presents themselves not only as a professional mountaineer with significant personal climbing successes, but also as a well-rounded individual able to connect with clients on multiple levels.   Candidates must possess a high level of creative energy, self-motivation, ability to self- critique, and a strong desire to strive for excellence. Ideal candidate would possess at least one AMGA or PCIA certification and be motivated to pursue additional certifications.   

Salary 
$26,000 - $30,000.00 annual salary with three weeks paid vacation after 12 months of continuous employment. Eligible for additional but limited unpaid leave for continuing mountaineering skill development . Salary increases based on performance. Flexible schedule.
